In 2018, The Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) announced that its Scientific & Technological Research Centre for Diamonds (WTOCD) had developed Ground breaking, Revolutionary, Game changing technology that fully automated the diamond polishing process and opened up the possibility of diamonds once again being polished on a large scale in Antwerp. In addition the Fenix Beta machine can cut just as fast and just as perfectly Emeralds, Sapphires and Rubies .
Antwerp Diamond Technologies bvba (ADT) owns and has in production for cutting of Diamonds the very first FENIX Beta machine, a fully automated technology, which has been 10 years in development, enabling any type of diamond to be polished upto 20 times faster than the current manual system. A stone, that would typically consume an entire day in processing can now be polished in one and a half hours. AWDC Chief Executive Ari Epstein commented, “This discovery fundamentally changes the diamond polishing process. Today’s wages simply make it too expensive to conduct this labour-intensive job in our country. FENIX puts an end to this, and can therefore be a real game-changer for the Antwerp diamond industry.” In addition to being fast, FENIX is also extremely accurate and revolutionary in the way it polishes diamonds, the AWDC has said. Yves Kerremans, CEO of the WTOCD observed, “Each diamond has a specific grain, a crystal orientation that has to be taken into account during the polishing process. This grain is in part the reason that diamond polishing is such a labour-intensive process. FENIX is the first technology that makes grain independent polishing possible."

Pol Van Der Steen
Paul Van Der Steen, 62, is an independent technology expert and consultant to the Belgian diamond industry as well as a Businessman. He holds a Master's degree in Chemical engineering from the University of Antwerp.
He started his career in 1975 as technical manager of the Diamond Grading Department of the Hoge Raad voor Diamant, HRD.
In 1987, he was a founding partner in Diamcad, a pioneer in precision polishing of high quality/high value diamonds. Ten years later, he consequently founded Diamscan, a developer of optimization algorithms for diamond manufacturing and in 2006 established Matrix Diamond Technology, a high-end manufacturing technology developer.
Currently Van Der Steen owns and heads Antwerp Diamond Technologies bvba and is its CEO and co-founder:
Van Der Steen is Chairman of the board of WTOCD, (Wetenschappelijk en Technisch Onderzoekscentrum voor Diamant), the Scientific and Technical Research center for Diamonds. He was and is involved in countless research and diamond technology development Projects and has authored a variety of training courses, books and manuals for diamond manufacturing and gemological training.
Van Der Steen feels strongly about the next evolution of Diamond Cutting and Polishing Technology within Fenix and its importance in giving Antwerp once again the ability to lead the world in Diamond Cutting and Polishing.
